Siân Davey - Looking for Alice

Society tells us that disability is bad, we are conditioned to think that there is a negative connotation associated with an extra chromosome? Familiar gaze? Documentary images taken by Siân Davey of her young daughter Alice who has Down syndrome are both powerful and poetic images with a clear message. This series of images captures emotion, illness and love throughout each image as well as an attempt to highlight key moments in life. It's at the very heart of what photography is all about, conveying a message through style; colour; layout and framing.

"On reflection I saw that Alice was feeling my rejection of her and that caused me further pain" - the art of being able to interpret feelings through imagery.

"I saw that the responsibility lay with me. I had to dig deep in my own prejudices. The result was that as my fear dissolved, I fell in love with my daughter. We all did."
